Interrogatives and exclamations
The interrogatives in Spanish are made up of pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs, and they ask questions. They always carry a written accent. The following interrogatives are the most common:
- ¿Cómo? How? — ¿Cómo se devuelve? (How is it returned?)
- ¿Cuál(es)?* What/Which? – ¿Cuál es el tuyo? (Which one is yours?)
- ¿Cuándo? When? — ¿Cuándo comienza? (When does it begin?)
- ¿Dónde? Where? — ¿Dónde está? (Where is it?)
- ¿Adónde?** (To) where? – ¿Adónde vas? (Where are you going?)
- ¿De dónde? (From) where? — ¿De dónde vienes? (Where are you from?)
- ¿Cuánto? How much? – ¿Cuánto cuesta? (How much is it?)
- ¿Cuántos/as? How many? – ¿Cuántas tienes? (How many do you have?)
- ¿Por qué? Why? — ¿Por qué no? (Why not?)
- ¿Qué?* What? — ¿Qué clase tienes? (What class do you have?)
- ¿A qué hora? At what time? — ¿A qué hora es? (At what time is it?)
- ¿Quién? Who? — ¿Quién dijo eso? (Who said that?)
- ¿A quién? Whom? — ¿A quién conoces? (Whom do you know?)
- ¿De quién?*** Whose? — ¿De quién es? (Whose is it?)
* Qué is used when asking for an explanation or a definition. It also directly introduces a noun. Cuál is the interrogative for all other cases of "what" or "which."
** Adónde is used with verbs of motion when the preposition "to" is either expressed or implied.
*** Be careful not to confuse "whose," the relative adjective, with the interrogative. The adjective cuyo/a/os/as agrees in number and gender with the noun it modifies.
Exclamations
Most interrogatives can be used as exclamations, depending on
the logic of the sentence.
- ¡Cuánto tiempo hace que no nos vemos! (How long it's been since we've seen each other!)
- ¡Qué bien manejas este coche! (You really handle this car well!)
- ¡Qué día más agradable! (What a pleasant day!)
- ¡Vaya un* día estupendo!
(What a wonderful day)
*¡Vaya un! means the same as the exclamation ¡qué! and must employ the indefinite article before the noun it precedes.
