Fixed noun-verb combinations
Like in English where one encounters fixed phrases like "to take into account", German, particularly scholarly and scientific German, possesses certain fixed noun-verb combinations which usually feature a particular preposition as well. Examples:
- auf Probleme stoßen (to run into problems)
- in Schwierigkeiten geraten (to get into trouble)
- in Erwägung ziehen (to take into consideration)
- zum Abschluss bringen (to bring to a conclusion)
- zum Abschluss kommen (to come to a conclusion)
- in Brand setzen (to set on fire)
- unter jemandes Einfluss geraten (to fall under someone’s sway)
