Verbal, adjectival, and nominal phrases with prepositions

Just like in English, certain verbs, adjectives, and nouns go with particular prepositions in German. In English, examples would be: I am waiting for my brother. I am proud of him. I am mad at him. I am content with him. I worry about him. I care about him. I care for him. I take care of him. I have problems with him. Example sentences:

  • Wir freuen uns auf die Reise. (We are looking forward to the trip.)
  • Er kümmert sich um seine kranke Frau. (He is taking care of his sick wife.)
  • Bist du glücklich über deine Beförderung? (Are you happy about your promotion?)
  • Denkst du an deine Freundin? (Are you thinking of your girlfriend?)
  • Denkst du über deine Arbeit nach? (Are you thinking about your job?)
  • Jede Kindergärtnerin ist für zehn Kinder verantwortlich. (Each kindergarten teacher is responsible for ten children.)
  • Seine Rücksicht auf andere ist vorbildlich. (His consideration for others is exemplary)

Note: These constructions can become fairly complicated when they involve reflexive and separable-prefix verbs. Example:

  • Sie bereitet sich auf das Examen vor. (She is preparing herself for the exam.)
